PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Healthy Campus/Community Initiative began on the Coahoma County Higher Education Center campus in Clarksdale in April 2014. Under the direction of Delta State University, it used a $502,000 grant received from the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation, to offer classes and activities that encouraged individuals to adopt lifelong healthy practices. It promoted a health and wellness curriculum, physical activity in Coahoma County schools and educated students and their parents about daily fitness activities and nutrition.

This was a great program that inspired many people within our community toward the path to a healthier lifestyle. The BCBS grant ended in October 2015, but parts of the program continue today.

HCCI programming continues today by offering fitness classes throughout the year and offering a week-long summer camp for area youth called Camp R.O.C.K. (Recreation and Outdoors for Coahoma Kids).

Due to COVID restrictions, Camp Rock is postponed until Summer 2022.

The fitness classes are sustained by charging a small fee for participants who sign up for 6 to 9 week sessions year round depending on our calendar. We currently offer Tai Chi classes for $5 and

Circuit Training classes for $6. See the 2021 schedule below for current fitness opportunities.

Tai Chi
NEW AVAILABLILTY!

Wednesdays

11:00 am

Tai chi is low impact and puts minimal stress on muscles and joints, making it generally safe for all ages and fitness levels. In fact, because tai chi is a low-impact exercise, it may be especially suitable if you're an older adult who otherwise may not exercise. Tai Chi uses slow, smooth body movements to achieve a state of relaxation of body and mind and is designed to build strength and promote balance. This class is held in the Cutrer Mansion and cost $5 per class.

Circuit Training

Mondays & Wednesdays

2:15 pm

Tuesdays & Thursdays

6:30 am

7:30 am

4:30 pm

Circuit training focuses on strength and muscle endurance and includes body conditioning and resistance training mixed with cardio. Everyone will complete a series of exercises back-to-back for about a minute each. The exercises will be completed on the machines, free weights, with body weight or on a cardio machine. These classes are available in the Lewis Building or via Zoom. Each class is $6.

Personal Training

Based on Availability

Personal Trainers focus on educating clients and enforcing policies regarding safe and proper use of equipment. They also are able to develop, document, and implement one-on-one, partner, or group workout programs that match the needs and goals of clients.
